What Is Oud? The Story Behind Perfumery's Most Precious Wood

Some scents announce themselves. Oud arrives like a rumour.

Dark, smoky, faintly sweet, sometimes leathery, sometimes almost animal, it is one of the most revered materials in perfumery, and one of the least understood. Many people know the word long before they know the smell.

So what is oud, exactly? Where does it come from, and why has it been treasured for centuries? Here is the story of the wood that perfumers still speak of in hushed tones.

What Is Oud?

Oud, also known as agarwood, is a fragrant resin that forms inside the heartwood of Aquilaria trees, native to the forests of South and Southeast Asia.

Here is the remarkable part: a healthy Aquilaria tree has no particular scent. Its wood is pale and unremarkable. Only when the tree is wounded and infected by a mould does it begin to defend itself, producing a dark, aromatic resin that slowly saturates the wood.

Over many years, that pale timber turns deep brown, almost black, and becomes intensely fragrant. Oud, in other words, is the scent of a tree healing itself.

Because only a fraction of trees develop this resin, and because it takes so long to form, true oud has always been rare.

Why Oud Is So Precious

Rarity is only part of it. Oud is often called "liquid gold", and it has been prized for centuries across Asia and the Middle East.

Pieces of resinous wood are burned as incense, releasing a slow, curling smoke that perfumes homes, clothes and hair. The wood is also distilled into a thick, dark oil, traditionally worn in tiny amounts on the skin. In many cultures, offering oud to a guest is a gesture of deep hospitality.

Demand has long outpaced what nature can supply. Wild Aquilaria trees are now protected under international trade rules, and much of the oud used today comes from cultivated plantations. Many modern perfumes also use oud accords: compositions built by perfumers to evoke the character of oud responsibly and consistently.

Whether natural or reconstructed, the aim is the same: to capture that elusive, smouldering depth.

What Does Oud Smell Like?

Ask ten people to describe oud and you may hear ten answers. That is part of its fascination.

Broadly, the scent of oud is:

  • Woody: dense, dark and resinous, far deeper than cedar or sandalwood.
  • Smoky: like embers, incense or a fire that has burned down to its glow.
  • Leathery and animalic: a warm, slightly wild facet that gives oud its sensuality.
  • Balsamic and sweet: in some qualities, a honeyed, almost syrupy softness underneath.

Oud can be challenging on first encounter, especially in its rawest form. Learn its language slowly, though, and it becomes very hard to forget.

Oud's Classic Companions

Oud is rarely worn alone. In perfumery, it is usually paired with materials that soften, brighten or deepen it.

Rose

The rose and oud pairing is one of the great classics of Middle Eastern perfumery. The flower's petal softness meets the wood's darkness, and each makes the other more beautiful.

Saffron

Saffron brings a glowing, leathery spice that sits naturally alongside oud. Rose, saffron and oud together form a trio that has defined luxury in fragrance for generations.

Amber, vanilla and resins

Warm, golden notes round out oud's edges and draw out its sweeter side, turning smoke into something enveloping.

Oud at Home: WILD in Hollywood

Oud is not only for the skin. Its smoky depth is extraordinary in a room, where it lingers in the air long after the evening has moved on.

WILD in Hollywood – Oud & Whiskey is our ode to this precious wood. Dark, fluid and a little risqué, it opens the door to the world beyond the speakeasy: sweet aromas of whiskey lie beneath notes of smoky wood, while precious oud suspends time in another world.

It is the oud candle for the late hours: a study, a reading chair, a bar cart with a good bottle on it. Light it as the evening deepens and let the room grow quieter.

Build the classic trio in your home

If you love the rose, saffron and oud tradition, try burning WILD alongside VISIONARY in Esfahan – Saffron & Rose, with its saffron, rosewater and subtle spices. One in the living room, one in the hallway, and the home becomes a passage between them.

Or soften it with warmth

For a gentler evening, pair the smoke of oud with something golden.

HERO in Niani – Amber & Patchouli brings creamy vanilla and toasted tonka beans: a sweet yet subtle warmth that echoes the amber and resins oud is so often paired with.

For Oud Lovers: A Smoky Wood to Wear

If oud draws you in, you are likely drawn to the darker side of the woody family: smoke, spice, resin and leather. Our Eaux de Parfum don't feature oud, but one in particular speaks the same language.

Prophetic Saffron opens with saffron, ginger and cinnamon. The heart unfolds into earthy, spicy papyrus, before settling into a smoky base of guaiacwood and patchouli. With saffron at its opening and smoke in its drydown, it shares much of the mood oud lovers seek: warm, spiced and quietly intense.

For something drier and more nostalgic, Meraki Cedar moves from the woody strength of cedar into nutmeg and leather, closing on the soft warmth of vanilla.

How to Begin with Dark Woods

Start small

Deep, woody scents tend to have presence. One or two sprays, or a single candle in a room, is often all you need.

Give it time

Smoky and resinous notes often reveal themselves slowly. Judge a woody fragrance after it has settled on your skin, not in the first moments.

Choose the season

As October turns the evenings cooler, dark woods come into their own. This is their moment.

Explore with the Discovery Set

The best way to know whether the darker side of fragrance is for you is to live with it for a few days.
